The determinants of the decision to adopt organic production techniques are
examined by applying binomial and multinomial legit techniques to a sample
of 237 horticultural producers from the UK. The analysis indicates that or
ganic horticultural producers are more likely to be younger, run smaller en
terprises and be female than their conventional counterparts, and that ther
e are significant non-economic aspects to the decision to adopt organic tec
hniques which may be missed in comparative profitability studies. rn additi
on, the analysis indicates that thp registered and unregistered organic pro
ducers should not be regarded as a homogeneous group, with significant diff
erences in terms oft he influence of gender and information sources observe
