The characteristics of the "ideal" pharmacotherapeutic agent for managing t
he symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and the advantages and disadvanta
ges of the pharmacotherapeutic agents that are currently available are revi
ewed. Decongestants, mast cell stabilizers. anticholinergics, intranasal st
eroids, and oral antihistamines and their place in the therapeutic armament
arium of the clinician are discussed.
