Nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) of the liver is a rare disease
responsible for intrahepatic portal hypertension in the absence of cir
rhosis of the liver. Histologic studies show small nodules containing
normal hepatocytes with little or no fibrosis and a uniform distributi
on throughout the liver, A number of other conditions are frequently p
resent in patients with NRH and call lead to the diagnosis, Three case
s of NRH with duodenal villous atrophy and a history of geophagia in c
hildhood are reported. This association has not been described previou
sly.
