Adsorption assisted desorption is an important phenomenon in catalytic cycl
es. It takes place when a desorption step is not equilibrated. The surface
concentration or fugacity of the desorbing species can be higher than its e
quilibrium value because of a preceding adsorption step in the catalytic cy
cle. This results in an increased rate of desorption. Qualitative and quant
itative examples of this effect are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.
