The structure on the subnanometer scale of hardened cement paste was invest
igated by means of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Ordinary Po
rtland cement pastes were cured at room temperature and at 100% relative hu
midity. the measurements were performed at different ageing times in order
to assess the evolution of nanopores. The lifetime spectra were rather comp
lex. showing three different long-lived components which reflect ortho-posi
tronium decay in the pores. From the positron data an estimate of the first
two moments of the distribution of the radii of the nanopores was obtained
