neuralgia and severe ocular involvement, Elderly and immunocompromised pat
ients are particularly susceptible to the development of complications. Ora
l acyclovir administered within 72 hours of rash prevents the occurrence of
ocular complications. The effect of acyclovir on the prevention of post-he
rpetic neuralgia has not been established.
