Abstract
We have investigated the effects of the bolus intravenous administration of neurotensin (NT) and its receptor antagonist [D-Trp(11)]-NT (NT-A) on the function of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis in the rabbit. Neither NT nor NT-A changed the ACTH plasma concentration with respect to control (vehicl e-injected) animals. NT did not evoke significant changes in either aldoste rone or corticosterone secretion, while NT-A significantly decreased hormon al production as compared to control rabbits. Taken together, our results s uggest that endogenous NT exerts a maximal tonic stimulatory action on adre nal secretory activity in the rabbit, which is independent of any effect on the pituitary ACTH release.
