This article examines the working lives of people offering services to the
media on a freelance basis. Almost all work from home using information ann
communication technologies but isolation in the home is not the norm as mo
st. maintain extensive personal networks in the industry. Nevertheless, pop
ular imagery of the 'electronic cottage' and the 'virtual organisation' onl
y superficially capture their experiences. Insecurity ann weakness in the m
arket are suggested by histories of redundancy ann dependence on single cli
ent organisations including former employers.
