A new approach of digital signal processing in gamma- and X-ray spectroscop
y which overcomes limitations of state-of-the-art systems is described. The
basic technical equipment consists of an energy resolving detector with a
preamplifrer followed by a fast sampling analog digital converter. The basi
c idea of the approach is the numerical decomposition of the measured signa
l into distributions caused by single photon absorption processes using sta
ndard pulses. The working principle and potential of the approach is demons
trated by the example of preamplifier pulses with large overlap on time sca
