Abstract
Ab initio molecular dynamics is used to study the contribution of a si ngle Al atom to an aluminum breakpoint contact during the final stages of breaking and the initial stages of the formation of such a contact . A hysteresis effect is found in excellent agreement with experiment and the form of the conductance steps before breaking of the contact i s discussed.
