Resonant photoemission measurements of TiO2(100) at the Ti L-2,L-3 edg
e are reported. For transitions from 2p to 3d states of e(g) symmetry
there is a resonance enhancement of the intensity of the band-gap defe
ct states by a factor of 6. The valence band shows resonance enhanceme
nts for transitions to states of both e(g) and t(2g) symmetry. The max
imum enhancement of 3 for the high binding energy indicates that the w
hole of the O 2p derived valence band is hybridized with Ti 3d stales,
with the higher binding-energy part being more strongly mixed. The de
fect-state resonances are broader than the absorption resonances and h
ave a width of about 4 eV due to the multiplet structure.
