The nature of the antiferro-quadrupolar (AFQ) ordering of TmTe is examined
theoretically by taking into account the crystal-field level scheme and the
multipolar interactions. It is shown that the Gamma(3)-type AFQ order is c
onsistent with the observed field-direction dependence of transition temper
ature and the field-induced antiferromagnetism. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B
