The magnetization measurements of TmS and TmSe have been performed in pulse
d magnetic fields up to 30 T. In both the compounds the induced magnetizati
ons along the [1 0 0] axis are significantly smaller than those along the o
ther principal axes ([110], [111]) even above T-N The absolute magnetizatio
n Values of principal axes are reduced compared to the expected values, alt
hough the crystal field splitting of 4f levels is negligibly small. They ca
nnot be explained by the crystal field effect only. (C) 1999 Published by E
