This short review presents recent photoemission data from Ce based heavy fe
rmion materials. Results from polycrystalline samples taken using an unprec
edented instrumental energy resolution confirm that high energy spectroscop
ic data and thermodynamic data can be interpreted within a unified framewor
k. The advantages of applying angle resolved photoemission to study well-ch
aracterised single crystal surfaces is then illustrated using two examples.
Finally, spectroscopic results from the Kondo insulator Ce3Bi4Pt3 are pres
ented. These data demonstrate how the influence of long range order in Ce K
ondo systems can be approached, and show, in a dramatic way, the necessity
for an instrumental resolution which is correctly adapted to the system und
er consideration. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
