Abstract
K+ production far below the free nucleon-nucleon threshold has been investi gated in collisions of Ar-36 on C-12, Ti-nat, and Ta-181 targets at an inci dent energy of 92 MeV per nucleon. The cross sections for K+ production hav e been inferred from the observed muon decays of positive kaons. The result s are discussed in the framework of a participant-spectator model and are c ompared to proton induced K+ production and to subthreshold pion production experiments. [S0556-2813(99)00303-9].
