Abstract
The laser-induced nonlinear optical response of micellar lyotropic liquid c rystals in the nematic and isotropic phases is presented. The Z-scan techni que is used to measure the amplitude and the sign of the nonlinear refracti ve indices of the lyotropic mixture. The amplitude of the nonlinear refract ive indices (similar to -10(-6) esu) is two orders of magnitude smaller tha n the one observed in thermotropic liquid crystals. The effect of the ferro fluid doping is also discussed, [S1063-651X(99)14103-5].
