Abstract
The one-loop quantum corrections to the free energy associated with scaler field in a higher dimensional static curved space-time is investigated maki ng use of the conformal transformation method. For a space-time with bifurc ate horizon, horizon divergences are accounted for choosing the Planch leng th as natural cutoff. The leading term in the high temperature quantum corr ection satisfies holographically the "area law", like the tree level Bekens tein-Hawking term. Furthermore it is stressed that only for the asymptotica lly AdS black holes one may have a microscopic interpretation of the entrop y also at quantum level. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
