The initial stages of complex formation between IrCl62- anion and anil
ine molecules were studied. It was shown that the complex is of anioni
c nature, exhibits paramagnetic properties, and its stoichiometry is 1
: 2. The presence of unpaired spin in the complex is supported by the
EPR data, the qualitative calculation showing a single spin per two a
niline molecules. Oxidation of aniline to form a radical species proce
eds in the reaction system due to formation of the complex between ani
line and IrCl62-. This stage is limiting in electrochemical synthesis
of polyaniline. In the presence of IrCl62-, this stage proceeds instan
tly and leads to acceleration of electrochemical synthesis of polyanil
ine, thus reducing the operating voltage and eliminating the induction
period.
