Abstract
Paleomagnetic samples were collected from four localities located in the so uthern rim of the Tarim basin. The samples were taken from volcanic rocks e rupted between Jurassic and Quaternary. Detailed analysis of all samples ha s been carried out with progressive thermal demagnetization. A characterist ic remanence (ChRM) with higher unblocking temperature has been isolated fr om all samples. The pole position from the middle Jurassic is at 52.5 degre es N, 187.9 degrees E (dp = 3.7 degrees, dm = 6.5 degrees); the directions of the ChRM of Cretaceous correspond to a paleopole at 69.7 degrees N, 211. 6 degrees E ( dp = 9.8 degrees, dm = 15.9 degrees); the Quaternary pole fro m the Pulu site is at 79.9 degrees N, 183.1 degrees E ( dp = 1.6 inverted p erpendicular, dm = 2.4 degrees). On the basis of these new paleomagnetic da ta, tectonic evolution of Tarim block is presented.
