Abstract
We report an optical and a magneto-optical study of the LaX series with X = S, Se and Te. The Kerr rotation is dominated by a sharp resonance occurrin g between 2 and 3 eV which is due to the interplay between the plasma reson ance and an electronic optical transition possibly involving f-states. We d iscuss our optical data in the perspective of the phenomenological classica l dispersion theory. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
