A fundamental chaotic instability in a system of two coupled lasers is
investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The amplitude ins
tability and mutual coherence of the light emitted by the lasers is in
vestigated as a function of the detuning and coupling parameters. A qu
antitative comparison of the intensity fluctuations is made with numer
ical simulations that include noise in the laser detuning.
