This review focuses on the growing role of magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) in the evaluation of gynecologic disease. Use of MRI as a proble
m-solving modality and as a primary imaging approach in the female pel
vis is discussed. Major practical applications of MRI in the female pe
lvis include evaluating benign uterine disorders, distinguishing exoph
ytic uterine versus adnexal masses, and staging of gynecologic maligna
ncies, particularly cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancer. Literat
ure addressing diagnostic efficacy and cost effectiveness in imaging i
s increasing; such data have supported the use of MRI for specific app
lications in the female pel,is. A brief analysis of this literature al
so is presented.
