U. Teubner et al., OBSERVATION OF VUV RADIATION AT WAVELENGTHS IN THE OMEGA(P)-WAVELENGTH AND 2-OMEGA(P)-WAVELENGTH RANGE EMITTED FROM FEMTOSECOND LASER-PLASMAS, Optics communications, 144(4-6), 1997, pp. 217-221
Electromagnetic emission close to multiples of the plasma frequency om
ega(p) has been observed experimentally from short-pulse laser-irradia
ted solid targets. Such radiation may be generated by a two-step proce
ss in which hot electron jets excite Langmuir waves in the overdense r
egion, which then undergo parametric conversion to electromagnetic emi
ssion at harmonics of the plasma frequency omega(p). The observations
are supported by particle-in-cell simulations, suggesting that this ra
diation may be exploited as a density diagnostic. (C) 1997 Elsevier Sc
