A narrow-band sound field excited by a point source in an arctic under
water sound waveguide is modeled. The time correlation function of the
received noiselike signal is considered for a situation when a vertic
al receiving array separates one mode from the sound field of a point
source. The case of an additive mix of signal and noise is also analyz
ed. It is shown that a weak signal can be detected in the background o
f intense noise for certain positions of the point sound receiver.
