In the deciduous forests of the tropical area of the Mexican Pacific c
oast, the tree Spondias purpurea is fruiting at the end of the dry sea
son. The fruits are consumed by terrestrial vertebrates including the
white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). If no free water sources a
re available, the deers' liquid requirements may be met by fruit consu
mption. By an exclusion experiment we were able to demonstrate that fo
raging chachalacas (Ortalis poliocephala) increase the rate of fruit f
all about 5 times.
