Abstract
Local non-equilibrium models of heat and mass transport processes are considered and shown to form a hierarchy of parabolic and hyperbolic e quations whose order increases with deviation away from local equilibr ium. The basic features of these models, in particular their relations hip to the generalised irreversible thermodynamics, are discussed.
