Two new sugar-substituted norbornenes, N-methyl norbornylgluconamide a
nd N-methyl norbornyllactobionamide, were prepared by the action of 5-
methylaminobicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene on delta-gluconolactone and lactob
ionic acid, respectively. Vinyl polymerization of these derivatives pr
oduced a high yield of neoglycopolymers bearing the norbornane moiety.
These amphiphilic polymers were highly soluble in water, forming stab
le particles consisting of aggregates of oligomers. The aggregates wer
e characterized by light scattering and electron microscopic examinati
on.
