Hps. Kochhar et al., COMPARATIVE BIOCHEMICAL INDEXES OF FETAL FLUIDS IN NORMAL FOALING ANDSTRESSFUL DELIVERY IN INDIAN THOROUGHBRED MARES, Journal of equine veterinary science, 17(4), 1997, pp. 206-210
This study was conducted on 22 mares for establishing the vital bioche
mical parameters in the amniotic fluid and allantoic fluid of mares ha
ving normal parturition and difficult/stressful foaling (dystocia). Ev
aluation of the biochemical constituents in fetal fluids revealed that
other than bilirubin, alkaline and acid phosphatase and lactate dehyd
rogenase, none of the biochemical parameter varied significantly among
st the two groups of normal foaling and dystocia suffering mares. The
significant variation in the values of transaminases, estrases, creati
ne, urea nitrogen, glucose, sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus
amongst the amniotic and allantoic fluids of each group (normal and dy
stocia) was observed. Variation in the biochemical indices could be at
tributed to fetal struggle and stress to the mare during dystocia. The
allantoic and amniotic fluids vary widely in terms of biochemical con
stituents in each group.
