We describe a system for interacting with shapes in two-dimensional im
ages with force feedback, using haptic devices. We construct multireso
lution models of boundary curves in images, using wavelet multiresolut
ion with good approximation properties. The boundary curves are treate
d as solid objects that will produce a force when pushed with a mouse-
like haptic interface. This interaction force is then to be rendered t
hrough a 2-D haptic interface, providing kinesthetic feedback to the u
ser. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
