Abstract
Currently, research on the wear map has been gaining more and more att ention from tribologists and has led to the creation of a new research area of wear. In this paper, the wear behaviors (wear mechanisms, sur face morphology characteristics and wear rates) of Cr ion implanted pu re iron lubricated with liquid paraffin in a large range of sliding sp eed and load were studied. On this basis, a wear map of Cr ion implant ed pure iron was created. The wear map is divided into three regions. The first is the region where the wear rates are in the magnitude of 1 0(-6) mm(3) m(-1). The worn surfaces of the specimens are smooth and c overed by oxide films, and the wear mechanism is mainly oxidative wear . The second is the micro-plowing and delamination wear region in whic h wear rates are about 10(-5) mm(3) m(-1), and the worn surfaces show shallow and wide grooves, and a spalling trace of flatlet debris. The third one is the micro-cutting dominated region where the wear rates a re more than 10(-4) mm(3) m(-1), and the worn surfaces have fine and d eep grooves with an uneven border.
