We have applied both tight-binding (TB) and multivalley envelope funct
ion (MEF) techniques to calculate the electronic states in T-and V-sha
ped realistic quantum wires taking into account Gamma-X mixing in the
conduction band. Strong reduction of the electron quantization energy
due to the off-resonant Gamma-X mixing has been found in all types of
quantum wires. This effect appears to be tied to the localization of t
he electron wave function and to its overlap with atomic layers next t
o interfaces.
