The effective polytropic index gamma(eff) in a magnetized anisotropic
plasma is obtained in the frame of one-fluid, double-adiabatic magneto
hydrodynamics. The value of gamma(eff) is found to depend on the chara
cteristics of the plasma flow, and on the temperature anisotropy. It i
s shown that the most probable value of gamma(eff) is 1.4-1.9 at the b
ow shock, and it may be less than unity in the magnetopause region.
