P. Finn et Ak. Cordes, MULTICULTURAL IDENTIFICATION AND TREATMENT OF STUTTERING - A CONTINUING NEED FOR RESEARCH, Journal of fluency disorders, 22(3), 1997, pp. 219-236
This article presents one view of the past, present, and future of mul
ticultural studies of stuttering. Historical issues are reviewed, and
current issues about the multicultural or crosscultural identification
and treatment of stuttering are then considered in light of that hist
ory. It appears from this combined analysis of historical and current
trends that many multicultural discussions about stuttering continue t
o be based on ethnocentric speculation and on ideas related to diagnos
ogenic theory, rather than on dependable empirical or clinical knowled
ge. Suggestions are provided in the form of issues to be considered an
d, more importantly, in the form of areas that will need considerably
more research if this disorder is to be approached from a truly multic
ultural perspective. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Inc.
