Abstract
Information about lenses in antiquity is presented-their purpose, opti cal properties, and manufacturing technology are discussed. A mew hypo thesis for the purpose of the lenses found by Schliemann in the excava tion of Troy is proposed. (C) 1997 The Optical Society of America.
