Abstract
An analytical method is used to study the tensile stresses beneath a r ock cutter, which is modelled as a finite length strip of facial press ure and shear along an infinite notch. For notch angles greater than 1 20 degrees, the elastic stress fields are predominantly tensile and it is recommended that cutters span less than 90 degrees in order to max imize tensile stress development and chip formation.
