An analytical method is used to study the tensile stresses beneath a r
ock cutter, which is modelled as a finite length strip of facial press
ure and shear along an infinite notch. For notch angles greater than 1
20 degrees, the elastic stress fields are predominantly tensile and it
is recommended that cutters span less than 90 degrees in order to max
imize tensile stress development and chip formation. (C) 1997 John Wil
