Validation of analyzer performance in real time has become desirable a
nd sometimes necessary. The use of a real time internal standard for r
eference to a periodic calibration-benchmark can produce valuable conf
idence for those depending on the analyzer to make important decisions
. Just as the temperature, pressure, and flow monitoring devices provi
de an indication of external performance; the internal standard provid
es an indication of the system internal performance. It evaluates the
sample preparation and measurement devices for stability and repeatabi
lity. Several methods of introducing internal Standards to analyzer sy
stems, ways to utilize the information gained and results of several a
pplications will be presented. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
