The above-vacuum-threshold electronic structure of ultrathin Co films
on W(110) is studied for coverages from 1 monoatomic layer (ML) upward
. For n ML, the spin-dependent layer-projected local density of states
(LDOS) for k parallel to = 0, which is calculated by a relativistic G
reen function method, exhibits over the energy range of each bulk band
n exchange-split pairs of majority and minority spin peaks. Calculate
d spin-polarized low-energy electron diffraction (SPLEED) specular bea
m spectra for normal incidence have minima exactly at the energies of
LDOS maxima of Lambda(1) symmetry Good overall agreement is found with
experimental SPLEED spectra obtained from single domains by spin-pola
