Melamine is used in polyurethane foams as flame retardant. Therefore i
ts effect on foaminess and on mechanical properties of the final foam
is very important. The effect of melamine particles on foaminess and o
n foam stability is studied in polyurethane model systems. Different m
elamine grades were used both in high resilience and in conventional s
ystems. It is concluded from foam meter experiments that the presence
of melamine particles does not influence significantly the foamability
and the foam stability of conventional polyurethane model system. The
average bubble size depends on the particle size of melamine. In the
case of high resilience system smaller Transient Gas Capture is found,
but the liquid drainage is not effected by melamine particles.
