Except for densities low enough to clearly have all carriers in the lo
west subband, the ground state of a finite width quantum well is subst
antially delicate to determine as it does not perturbatively come from
the free carrier ground state. We show that finite momentum transfer
Coulomb excitations can generate an instability each time the carrier
density gets close to a threshold for new subband occupation. (C) 1997
