A. Petek et al., STOCHASTIC-ANALYSIS OF CURRENT FLUCTUATIONS DURING GENERAL CORROSION OF STAINLESS-STEEL IN SULFURIC-ACID, Corrosion, 53(12), 1997, pp. 928-934
Current fluctuations during general corrosion of stainless steel in su
lfuric acid (H2SO4) were studied experimentally and analyzed using a s
imple electrochemical model. Stochastic behavior of the metal-electrol
yte interface in the model was based upon the assumption that elementa
ry fluctuation sources were related to fluxes of electrons that pass f
rom a metal to electron-acceptor ions in solution. The number of succe
ssful electron transfers obeyed a Gaussian distribution, from which th
e corrosion current density (i(corr)) and transfer coefficients could
be determined.
