The method of log-magnitude diagram has gained wide acceptance in the
synthesis of scalar follow-up systems. It features visual representati
on, of the result and relative simplicity of the algorithm. Yet not be
ing an optimization method, it leaves open the question of improving t
he chosen solution. The present paper proposes an optimization approac
h to synthesizing follow-up systems which retains visualization and mi
nimizes the natural characteristic of system quality - its degree of o
scillations for given (to within a factor) log-magnitude diagrams in t
he high-frequency and low-frequency domains. Therefore, the choice of
the log-magnitude diagram of a closed system is replaced by the choice
of frequency-dependent factors defining the penalties for deviations
from the required boundaries, after which the proportionality coeffici
ent and equation are calculated mechanically by the method of frequenc
y-uniform optimization.
