The iterative-perturbative (IF) procedure for S-matrix to potential in
version is applied to spin-one projectiles for the restricted case of
vector spin-orbit interaction only. in order to evaluate this extensio
n of IP inversion we have inverted the multi-channel RGM S-lj of Kanad
a et al. [Nucl. Phys. A 444 (1985) 209] for deuterons scattering from
He-4 with deuteron distortion and then compared the central components
with those derived from the resonating group model (RGM) with the spi
n set to zero. Attention is given to the question of how well the resu
lting potentials are established. Reliable spin-one inversion is demon
strated. Results relating to inversion, to deuteron-nucleus interactio
ns and to RGM are presented and suggest the range of nuclear interacti
on information which the procedure makes possible. Unusual non-localit
y and parity dependence effects are found; these are of possible relev
ance to generic properties of nuclear potentials. (C) 1997 Elsevier Sc
