Although there has been much research on information systems (IS) plan
ning, most of this was carried out in America or Europe. There are ver
y limited studies on IS planning in the Asian context. This paper exam
ines IS planning in the context of Singapore, a small island of 650 sq
uare kilometers in South-East Asia. Data were collected using a questi
onnaire survey sent to the highest ranking IS executive in 450 firms.
92 usable responses were received; of these, 58 indicated that their f
irms undertook some form of IS planning. The macro-economic features o
f the firms, the degree of participation in IS planning by various exe
cutives, critical success factors and benefits of IS planning, and oth
er planning parameters were examined. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
