Experimental methods for studying ionisation and excitation of organic
liquids with photons in the 10-30 eV region are described: this is no
w facilitated by the availability of thin metal windows. Yields and lu
minescence decays up to 150 ns are reported for solutions of p-terphen
yl in squalane. The shape of the decays is a measure of the distributi
on of ion-electron separations; though expected to become constant a f
ew eV above the threshold at 8.25 eV, it is found to change over the w
hole of the experimental range. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
