Using data from the Fermilab fixed target experiment E665, general pro
perties of forward produced charged hadrons in mu p interactions at a
primary muon energy of 470 GeV are investigated. The normalized inclus
ive single-particle distributions for Feynman-x D(chi(F)) and for the
transverse momentum D(p(t)(2),chi(F)) are measured as a function of W
and Q(2). The dependence of the average transverse momentum squared (p
(t)(2)) on chi(F), W and Q(2) is studied. The increasing contribution
from diffractive production as Q(2) decreases leads to a reduction of
the average charged hadron multiplicities at low (positive) chi(F) and
an enhancement at large chi(F), for Q(2) less than or similar to 10 G
eV2. It also reduces (p(t)(2)) for Q(2) less than or similar to 5 GeV2
and 0.4 less than or similar to chi(F) < 1.0.
