B. Scheidleder et al., INFLUENCE OF DIETETIC AND BALNEOTHERAPEUT ICAL MEASURES ON LIPID STATUS AND LIPID-PEROXIDATION IN PATIENTS TAKING A CURE, Ernährungs-Umschau, 44(11), 1997, pp. 409
The work aimed at specifying the influence of dietetic and balneothera
peutical measures on lipid status and lipid peroxidation in patients t
aking a 3 weeks' cure at a spa. 84 patients had been selected at rando
m who received a certain diet besides the usual therapy (iodine brine
cure, iodine brine baths and packs, inhalations, eye iontophoresis, ex
ercises). For normal and reduction diets, average daily energy and nut
rient supply were calculated. Before and after the cure, cholesterol,
triglycerides, HDL, LDL, uric acid, malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathi
one peroxidase (GSH-PX) in the blood/plasma were routinely determined.
There was a significant improvement of the lipid status and a signifi
cant decrease of MDA. The decrease of GSH-PX was interpreted as a resp
onse to reduced peroxide formation under the influence of iodide. Iodi
ne supply during the cure is likely to have a favourable influence on
the lipid peroxidation. Diets should be orientated towards the DGE rec
ommendations.
