Ch. Liu et al., NONLINEAR BEHAVIOR ON AN OZONE PHOTOCHEMICAL SYSTEM IN THE STRATOSPHERE - RESPONSE TO THE EMISSION STRENGTHS OF CL-X AND NOX, SCIENCE IN CHINA SERIES D-EARTH SCIENCES, 40(6), 1997, pp. 584-591
A nonlinear box system describing ozone photochemistry in the stratosp
here is presented. Influences of pollutants, such as odd chlorine (Cl-
x) and add nitrogen (NOx) discharged by human activities, on photochem
ical states of the system are investigated in detail. The results show
that the solutions of the hox system constitute a' cusp catastrophe m
anifold in the state-parameter space. An increase of about 30% for Cl-
x source strength or a decrease of about 30% for NOx source strength f
rom their current level may lead to catastrophic transition and result
s in a reduction of ozone concentration about 50 times.
