The aim of this paper was to determine the influence of the shielding
medium and the type of welding flux on the deposition I ate in are wel
ding. Previous studies have stated that the shielding medium has no in
fluence on deposition rate and a number of mathematical models derived
by previous authors confirm this. In the present work it was found th
at a larger quantity of material was deposited when using helium, argo
n, or CO2 as shielding. With constant wire feedrate and constant power
; are current was lowest with helium; shielding and highest with argon
shielding; with just wire feedrate constant, arc power was lowest wit
h helium and CO2 shielding and highest with basic Pur. It was also fou
nd that are welding efficiency was highest for helium shielding and lo
west for submerged are welding with basic flux.
