L. Lacey et al., A TOOL FOR MONITORING THE PERFORMANCE OF FAMILY-PLANNING PROGRAMS IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS - AN APPLICATION IN NIGERIA, International family planning perspectives, 23(4), 1997, pp. 162-167
A one-page family planning questionnaire developed by Nigeria's Federa
l Office of Statistics can be attached to nationally representative su
rveys that are routinely conducted to monitor development activities.
The module collects data on household composition, source of family pl
anning information, current use of family planning methods and the sou
rce of services and supplies. A comparison of data from two of these f
amily planning modules, fielded in December 1992 and December 1993, wi
th results from two earlier national surveys reveals that modern metho
d use among women aged 15-49 went from 4% in 1990 to 9% in 1992, and t
hen rose to 11% in 1993. Such a tool allows program managers to docume
nt the expansion of family planning practice between infrequently cond
ucted national fertility surveys.
