Abstract
The photophysical properties of N,N'-di(9-anthracylmethyl) hexahydropy rimidine 1 and its analogues are reported. The electronic spectra and kinetics of these compounds are studied over a range of solvent and te mperature conditions. It is shown that the unique structure of 1 leads to the formation of a very stable (tau = 120 ns) anthracenyl diadduct . The results also suggest that the viscosity, but not the polarity, o f the solvent plays an important role in excimer formation. (C) 1997 E lsevier Science S.A.
